Episode 66 of the SERVICOM Help Desk Radio Programme held on 7th May 2019 and it featured National Pension Commission (PenCom) for more enlightenment on Pension related matters.
The National Coordinator and Chief Executive Officer of SERVICOM, Mrs. Nnenna Akajemeli appreciated the Ordinary President and the Brekete family for the sustained platform where citizens have been helped in accessing satisfactory services in the Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
She stated that the area of discussion for the day was of great interest as it affects retirees who are a vulnerable segment of the society, adding that she had had urged the Director General of the Bureau for Public Service Reforms (BPSR) to listen to the programme as SERVICOM would strategically engage with the Bureau on how to review some pension reforms in order to eliminate difficulties faced by retirees or their relatives in accessing funds timely.
Mr Tijjani Aliyu, Head of Cooperate Responsibility and SERVICOM Nodal Officer PenCoM, said the Commission was established in 2004 to handle the contributory Pension scheme of employees of Treasury funded Ministries Department and Agencies, adding that new pension scheme replaced the Defined Benefit Scheme.
According to him, “PenCom has tried over the years to improve on what we do to make things easier for people who are about to retire, we have an annual Verification exercise, unfortunately we have to engage in that annually in order to get every document from the individuals that are about to retire”.
Mr. Tijjani also mentioned that Verification exercises by PenCom are carried out solely for individuals that are about to retire and is therefore done only once for an individual. “The verification helps the agency capture all information about the individual and enables the agency compute the individuals retirement benefit” he said.
